A Typical Day During Puja

13

As in all 'Barir Puja' ladies of the Samiti leave their house at the crack of dawn to converge at the venue to do 'pujor jogar'. Amidst friendly banter, dubbo ghas is meticulously counted and bundled, innumerable packets of prasad packed, chandan paste made and all other puja items neatly arranged under the supervision of the purohit.

Also simultaneously but away from their gaze cooks start preparing the day's Bhog. Obviously it is no mean task to cook for nearly 3000 people each day. But they do and how! The serpentine lines during bhog distribution are a testimony to their culinary abilities. A special 'bhog' is also prepared for Ma Durga, but this is done by the members themselves.

Back at the hall, Puja starts with the sonorous voice of the purohit chanting mantras. Together with this, the fragrant haze of 'dhoop' mingles with the sweet aroma of flowers to create an ambience that is so typically 'puja'. Devotees stream in wearing crisp colorful clothes to savor the atmosphere and eagerly wait for 'pushpanjali' to pray to the mother goddess.

After pushpanjali, it is time for Bhog. It is a tradition of Bombay Durgabari, to show hospitality by having Bhog served by the ladies of the Samiti. While the women take their place behind the counters, the men ensure that food is served in an orderly fashion. This is followed by Daridra Narayan Seva where bhog is distributed to the poor.

Come evening and it is time for 'Aarati'. The sound of the rhythmic Dhaks, the delicate music created by hand bells, the exotic pattern of multi layered 'pradeeps', the delicate swish of the 'hathpankha', all combine to produce a feeling of joy, a feeling that with Ma Durga's blessings, there is nothing that one cannot overcome.
